🏄 First Time Jet Skiing? 12 Tips Before You Hit the Water
Safety first, fun always. Everything you need to know about jet ski safety regulations, equipment, and our protocols in Sotogrande.
Your first time on a jet ski is one of those experiences you remember. The acceleration, the spray, the views from the water — it is genuinely exciting. But it is also completely normal to be nervous. Most of our first-time riders in Sotogrande have the same questions: Is it hard? Will I fall off? What if I crash?
Here are 12 practical tips from our instructors to help you enjoy every second of your first ride.
1. You Don't Need Any Experience
Jet skis are designed to be intuitive. There is a throttle on the right handlebar (squeeze to go, release to stop) and you steer by turning the handlebars. That is it. No gears, no clutch, no complicated controls. If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride a jet ski.
Every session at Jetski Sotogrande starts with a 5-minute safety briefing where the instructor explains exactly how everything works. By the time you hit the water, you will know what to do.
2. Start Slow — Seriously
The number one mistake first-timers make is going full throttle immediately. Modern jet skis are powerful machines — they accelerate faster than most cars. Start at half throttle, get used to the steering, and gradually build up speed as your confidence grows.
On a closed circuit, you have 20 or 30 minutes — there is no rush. Spend the first 2–3 minutes at a gentle pace and the rest will feel natural.
3. Keep Your Weight Centred
Sit upright with your knees slightly bent and gripping the sides of the seat. Keep your weight centred over the jet ski — do not lean too far forward or back. When turning, lean gently into the turn like you would on a motorcycle. Leaning away from the turn is what causes beginners to lose balance.
4. Look Where You Want to Go
Your body follows your eyes, and the jet ski follows your body. Look at where you want to go — not at what you want to avoid. If you stare at a buoy thinking "don't hit it", you will steer straight towards it. Look past it and the jet ski will follow.
5. Don't Let Go of the Throttle in a Turn
This catches a lot of first-timers out. Jet skis steer using a water jet — when you release the throttle, the jet stops, and you lose steering. If you are in the middle of a turn and suddenly let go, the jet ski will keep going straight.
The rule: maintain gentle throttle through turns. You do not need speed — just enough power to keep the steering jet working.
6. Dress for Getting Wet
You will get wet. Even on a calm day, spray from the jet ski and wake from turns will soak you. Here is what to wear:
- Swimwear — board shorts, bikini, rash guard. Avoid loose clothing that can get caught
- Water shoes or secure sandals — flip-flops will fly off instantly
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+, waterproof) — apply 30 minutes before, including the backs of your hands and neck
- No jewellery — rings, necklaces and watches come off in the water and you will never find them
We provide life jackets for everyone. You must wear them — no exceptions.
7. Leave Valuables on Shore
Your phone, wallet, keys and sunglasses should stay in a locker or with someone on shore. If you absolutely must bring your phone, use a waterproof pouch with a lanyard — but honestly, the best photos come from someone watching from the shore or from our own footage.
8. Ride With a Friend
Every jet ski at Jetski Sotogrande seats two people. Riding as a passenger first is a great way to build confidence before taking the controls yourself. The passenger sits behind the driver, holds the grab handles (not the driver), and leans with the turns.
Sharing a jet ski also makes it more affordable — the price is per jet ski, not per person.
9. Listen to the Briefing — All of It
It is tempting to nod along and rush onto the water. Do not. The 5-minute safety briefing covers hand signals, boundary rules, what to do if you fall off, and emergency stop procedures. Every single one of those things matters.
The most important signal: the instructor raises a closed fist = stop immediately. If you see it, release the throttle and wait.
10. Choose the Right Option for You
If it is your very first time, start with a closed circuit session. You ride freely at your own pace within a safe, marked area. There is no group to keep up with, no route to follow — just you and the jet ski.
If you want more adventure but are still nervous, choose the Gibraltar guided tour. The guide sets a comfortable pace, stops regularly, and you ride in a line — so you always know exactly where to go.
11. Respect the Water
The sea around Sotogrande is generally calm in the morning, but conditions can change. If the instructor says the tour route has changed due to wind or waves, trust them. If they reduce speed, there is a reason. These are experienced professionals who know this coastline.
Also respect other water users. Stay away from swimmers, sailboats and kayakers. On a guided tour the captain handles this, but on the circuit you need to be aware of your surroundings.
12. Relax and Enjoy It
The most common thing first-timers say after their ride is: "I wish I had relaxed sooner." The first minute or two can feel intense, but once you settle in, the experience is pure joy. The sound of the engine, the wind, the spray, the views of the coast — it is unlike anything else.
By the 5-minute mark, most beginners are grinning. By the end, they are booking again.
What If I Fall Off?
On a closed circuit you probably won't — the jet ski is very stable at moderate speeds. But if it happens, here is what to do:
- Let go of the jet ski — do not try to grab it
- Your life jacket keeps you floating — stay calm
- The jet ski has a kill cord attached to your wrist, so the engine cuts immediately
- The instructor will come to you or guide you back on
On a guided tour, the guide is always watching and will circle back within seconds. Falling off is safe, rare, and nothing to worry about.
