☀️ Best Time for Water Sports in Sotogrande: Month-by-Month

Summer isn't the only option. Here's your month-by-month guide to the best time for water sports in Sotogrande.

Back to Blog

Sotogrande's water sports season runs from April through October, but conditions vary dramatically across those seven months. Knowing when to go — and what to expect — can be the difference between a perfect day on the water and a disappointing one.

This guide breaks down every month with real data on water temperature, wind, crowd levels and which activities work best. No vague "summer is great" advice — specific, practical information so you can plan properly.

October 19–21°C 20–24°C Moderate Low ⭐⭐⭐⭐

April — Season Opening

April marks the start of the season. Water temperatures hover around 16–17°C — fresh but manageable with a wetsuit. Air temperatures are pleasant (18–22°C) and the Costa del Sol is starting to warm up.

Best activities: Jet ski tours (you stay dry above the waist), kayaking, paddleboarding on calm mornings.

Skip: Towable rides — getting thrown into 16°C water is not everyone's idea of fun.

Why go now: Zero crowds, lowest prices, and you can often get same-day bookings without any wait.

May — The Sweet Spot Starts

May is when Sotogrande starts to feel like summer. Water hits 18–19°C, which is comfortable for swimming. The wind is usually light in the mornings, and afternoons stay warm without being oppressive.

Best activities: Everything is open and conditions are excellent. Jet ski tours benefit from calm morning seas. Paddleboarding is ideal — flat water, no wind, warm enough for a dip.

Crowds: Still low. School is in session across Europe, so families are absent. You will share the water with very few people.

Tip: May is the best month for photography on the water. The light is clear, the water is blue, and there is no summer haze.

June — Peak Conditions

June is arguably the best all-round month for water sports in Sotogrande. Water temperatures reach 20–22°C, air is consistently 25–30°C, and the Levante wind has not arrived yet. The sea is calm most mornings and stays manageable all day.

Best activities: Everything. This is the month to book the longer jet ski tours — the 1.5-hour Estepona route is spectacular in June. Towable rides are perfect now that the water is warm enough to enjoy falling in.

Crowds: Medium. The first wave of summer tourists arrives mid-June, but it is nothing compared to July and August. You can usually book 1–2 days ahead without issues.

Tip: Book morning sessions. By midday it is getting hot, and the water gets choppier in the afternoon.

July — High Season Begins

July brings peak temperatures (28–34°C air, 22–24°C water) and the first serious crowds. This is when the Levante wind can become a factor — this hot, dry easterly wind blows from the Strait of Gibraltar and can make the sea choppy for 2–3 days at a time.

Best activities: Towable rides are at their best — warm water, fun waves. Jet ski tours run unless the Levante is strong. Paddleboarding and kayaking work well early morning before the wind arrives.

Crowds: High. Book at least 3–4 days in advance, especially for jet ski tours and weekend slots.

Levante watch: Check the forecast before booking. When the Levante blows, we reschedule at no cost. It typically lasts 2–3 days and then the sea goes flat again.

August — Peak Season

August is the busiest month. Spanish families are on holiday, European tourists fill the resorts, and Sotogrande is at maximum capacity. Water temperatures peak at 23–25°C — bathtub warm by Mediterranean standards.

Best activities: Everything runs, but book early. The most popular slots (10:00 and 11:00) sell out a week ahead for jet ski tours.

Crowds: Very high. If you want to ride, book online as soon as you know your dates. Walk-up availability is rare.

Tip: Late afternoon sessions (17:00–19:00) are underrated in August. The heat drops, the light is golden, and many families have left the beach.

September — The Best-Kept Secret

September is, honestly, the best month. Water temperature is still 22–23°C (warmer than June), the Levante is rare, and the crowds thin dramatically after the first week. Schools reopen across Europe, and Sotogrande shifts from packed to pleasantly quiet.

Best activities: Everything — and you will often have the water almost to yourself. The 1-hour Gibraltar jet ski tour in September is magical: calm seas, warm air, and the Rock glowing in the autumn light.

Crowds: Medium dropping to low. Same-day bookings are usually possible.

Tip: September is the month for couples and adults without children. The vibe is relaxed, the prices are fair, and the weather is still properly hot.

October — Season Closing

October is the final month of the season. Water is still 19–21°C — comfortable enough for activities, though you will feel the chill if you fall in on a towable ride. Air temperatures are 20–24°C and the days are shorter.

Best activities: Jet ski tours, kayaking, paddleboarding. Towable rides run but are more enjoyable if you handle cooler water.

Crowds: Very low. This is the quietest month — ideal if you want a private experience without booking a private session.

Tip: Check our end-of-season schedule. Some activities have reduced availability in the last two weeks of October.

Best Time by Activity

Activity Best Month(s) Why
Jet ski tours June, September Calm seas, warm, low-medium crowds
Closed circuit jet ski June–September Warm enough, sheltered area
Banana boat / towables July, August Warmest water for falling in
Paddleboarding May, June, September Flat water, no wind, pleasant temperature
Kayaking May–October Works in all conditions, self-paced
Pedal boat June–September Warm enough for swimming stops

Best Time of Day

Regardless of the month, time of day matters more than most people realise:

  • 09:00–11:00: Calmest water, best for jet ski tours and paddleboarding. The sea is often glass-flat.
  • 11:00–14:00: Still good. Wind may start to pick up but conditions are usually fine.
  • 14:00–16:00: Hottest part of the day. Wind is strongest. Towable rides get wilder. Not ideal for paddleboarding.
  • 17:00–19:00: Wind drops, temperature is perfect, golden light. Underrated slot — often has availability when morning is booked out.

The Levante Factor

One thing that makes Sotogrande different from Marbella or Málaga is the Levante. This easterly wind funnels through the Strait of Gibraltar and can turn a calm sea choppy within hours. It typically lasts 2–3 days and then disappears completely.

During strong Levante days:

  • Jet ski tours may be rescheduled or adjusted to a sheltered route
  • Towable rides may be cancelled (for safety, not fun)
  • Paddleboarding and kayaking are not recommended
  • The closed circuit usually operates (it is sheltered by the port breakwater)

We always reschedule or refund if conditions are unsafe. Check the forecast and book flexible dates if you are visiting in July or August when the Levante is most common.
